How many people have been offered the key to a city? Thanks to a project by Paul Ramirez Jonas we can all get keys to New York City.
Paul Ramirez Jonas was born in California and raised in Honduras. He is known for art projects that challenge spectators to participate. From what I have read about Ramirez Jonas, a handful of his projects seem to revolve around keys. For example, in a project titled, "Mi Casa Su Casa" he talked to an audience about how space can either be defined as locked or unlocked and then invited individuals to exchange keys.
"Key to the City" runs from June 3rd-27th, so if you are in New York make sure you stop by the kiosk in Times Square. The keys that are handed out actually open up little treasures throughout the city -- gates, doors, cemeteries, etc. However, keys won't be handed out for kicks. You have to take a friend, brother, sister, etc. and explain why he or she is deserving of a key to the City. According to the website, "keys will be awarded for reasons large and small."
